Classic and Agile Project Management
The leading global not-for-profit membership association PMI (Project Management Institute) defines project management as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. An important aspect here is that these activities are aimed at a temporary project with a clearly defined beginning and end. Furthermore, a project is something that is not part of routine business operations.
We apply this definition of project management to all of our activities. Because of the application of well-established standards and the use of appropriate methods, we ensure an organized and transparent project management that is founded on performance goals.
In project management, we often distinguish between classis project management and agile project management. Depending on the requirements of your project, together with you, we choose the appropriate project management method.
Classic Project Management
Classic project management involves a very standardized approach based on phases. At the beginning, project goals have to be clearly defined. These goal definitions should always be SMART which means that they should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-based. The goals have to touch on all three points of the Project Management Triangle (time, scope, cost). Accordingly, the partial goals for these points are deadlines, cost objectives, and earnings targets.
Agile Project Management

Information about the project is exchanged among the participants. The project goals and expectations for the project are discussed and the scope and area of application are considered.
The participants plan the project in its entirety. The plan can and should of course be adapted during the course of the project. However, the cornerstones of the project are decided upon in this phase already. Furthermore, the following topics are discussed: results and milestones, important deadlines, cost and personnel capacities.
This phase is often the longest – or at least the one in which the most changes happen. Every participant takes care of their tasks and regularly updates the project manager. Select team members also start tracking their results.
- Monitoring and Management
Most important in this phase are the so-called KPIs (key performance indicators). These are key figures that are used to measure the success of the project. They are used by the project manager to determine the status of subtasks and the project as a whole to make changes where necessary.
- Project Closeout
At the end of the project, the project manager provides feedback to all participants and also collects their feedback to find out what went well and what did not. Often, the project manager must still reconcile the budget and write the final report in this phase.
Project Management: Our Agile Methods
Within agile project management, there are various different methods. Two of the most important and most popular methods are described below.
SCRUM is a method that is based on lean management. Therefore, it is a so-called lean project management method. This method works best with projects for which the requirements and possible solutions are not very defined at the beginning. SCRUM can be described as iterative and incremental, because results of partial goals are used to continually adapt the project plan. The SCRUM team consists of the project owner, the development team, and a SCRUM Master. The project is split up into so-called sprints, stages of the project in which incrementally small changes are implemented.
Kanban originates from process management but is very often used in project management due to its excellent visualization of progress. At the beginning of every project the so-called backlog is defined. The backlog refers to the problems that are solved when the project is completed. Often it is simply a list of tasks that have to be completed during the duration of the project. Every task is written on a card. This card is placed on the Kanban board which usually consists of at least three columns: To Do, In Progress, Done. This visualization of tasks allows for a quick identification of bottlenecks and supports the simple visualization of the progression of the project.
